Heavy believes that rigorous academic inquiry and philosophical investigation should precede the development of emerging technologies. Without a theoretical underpinning, the human engagement with technology can become untethered from meaningful applications. As such, a thoughtful criticality is a less visible, but nonetheless crucial part of how any futurist, developer, designer, or artist should engage with technological media. The hallmark of the philosopher is two-fold: to see the whole beyond the particulars and to think critically about those things we hold most dear. Nothing can be held sacred and beyond critical investigation either academically or technologically.
