Sponsored by FORM in Perth, Australia, Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] joined 30 other international artists as a part of the PUBLIC festival. Re+Public completed two small murals on Murray st. across from the IBIS hotel, and a larger mural on Wolf Lane. Additionally, our murals appeared in bus stop shelters around the city. These murals are digitally activated in mobile augmented reality [AR]. Users can interact with the mural by touching either "production" or "beauty". This choice forms an anonymous data set, which could potentially develop into more intentional information with regard to how citizens interact with the urban space that surrounds them.

In participation with the Skyline digital art event and sponsored by LERATA [laboratory for experimentation and research in art, tech, and architecture], and in collaboration with muralist Raymond Harmon [UK], Mirage is an augmented reality based 3D fine art installation. By democratizing the nature of art into a social experience that allows for the creation of non-object oriented art across mobile and web based platforms, Mirage represents a disruptive step in the evolution of art and urban interactivity. App was available on Google Play.
Lapse is an experiential, augmented reality installation conceived by Ivan Depena and built by The Heavy Projects working with Miami Art in Public Places. Lapse takes the user on a journey through several sites in the Miami metro area and uncovers virtual art experiences. The project is based loosely on a short story written by Depena called "The Fallen Sky".
Installations Include:
sonic distortion in miami metro | augmented mural | dynamic sculpture | prose discovery [ images by depena ]
This Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] mural tells the story of invention and ideas, and how they expand and grow to shape our futures. As viewers move from the outside corner, towards the main building entrance, they will discover four distinct scenes exploring how ideas, and inventions can grow to shape our world, and our future. The narrative of the artwork mirrors much of Qualcomm’s own success story in generating new ideas that grow to change the world. Special shout-out to the kids at the Mobile Learning Lab and to Geoff Stead. Additionally, we would like to thank Jack Lerner and his excellent team at the University of California - Irvine Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology.

G George is an example of street ARt inside a gallery. In Lab Art, a Los Angeles gallery, when placing street artist Kai Aspire's "Masked" (George Washington) in the camera view of your smartphone (Android or Iphone), the painting unlocks a piece of augmented reality art, or ARt. This kind of augmented reality | artistic interaction is an example of hypAR-reality, which implodes the distinction between the "real" and the "imaginary." Triggered from the "real" world, the virtual "art" can reveal another layer of meaning, which is in this case... the "g"angster street artist we always knew G George was. Special thanks to Chris Nunes and Hensi Morris.
Sponsored by Qualcomm Vuforia and IEEE, Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] launched its first solo mural at SXSW Interactive 2014. Typically collaborating w/ other muralists, Re+Public saw creating original mural content as the natural evolution in our work. An 84' x 32' wheatepaste mural, the content deals with the concepts of production, advertising, and consumption. Users can interact with the mural by touching either "production" or "beauty". This choice forms an anonymous data set, which could potentially develop into more intentional data sets with regard to how citizens interact with the urban space that surrounds them. Special thanks to Ean Mering, Serhan Ulkumen, Ricky, and Morgan Catalina.

Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] traveled to Brussels, Belgium to participate in a tech art summit / workshop organized by the European Union Commission, IMAL, and the Harlan Levey Projects [bridge]. During the five day stay in Brussels, we seized the opportunity to digitally takeover Grand-Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We successfully built three mobile augmented reality functionalities: interactive augmented mapping, interactive data visualization, and a digital art installation.
Heavy created a digital takeover of the Driskill Hotel in an effort to promote the Open Future Series and OpenStand. Sponsored by theW3C and IEEE Standards OpenStand is a global community that stands together in support of The Modern Paradigm for Standards – an open, collective movement to radically improve the way people around the globe develop, deploy and embrace technologies for the benefit of humanity. Special thanks to Ean Mering and Leigh Durst.
A Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] collaboration, this is one of the first use of feature tracking on architecture. in which we digitally resurfaced, or "skinned" physical buildings in urban centers by overlaying 3D content onto the physical environment. Creatively harnessing augmented reality (AR) technology, Re+Public turned architecture into locations for meaningful cultural exchange and, in doing so, provides the user with a new way of seeing public space as a more open and democratic media environment. Special shout out to Ean Mering for his collaborative efforts on the digital content creation.
Public space remains an elusive frontier in which commercial interests govern the discourse. In an effort to highlight the individual's lack of autonomy in this arena, Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] began to explore the potential of augmented reality [AR] to reappropriate outdoor commercial signage in order transform, filter, and democratize the messaging in public space. The AR | AD Takeover channel has augmented five outdoor advertising campaigns. Specifically, the channel uses five ads in New York City's Times Square as triggers for a curated street art show that includes works by Ron English, John Fekner, PosterBoy, Doctor D, and OX. Photos by Will Sherman.
Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] worked in collaboration w/ MOMO, Grand Center and the Art and Life Alliance, and the Moto Museum. This project included an 85' x 21' mural by MOMO comprised of 14 basic shapes. Users can view, walk around, in, and through the 42 digital variations of the basic shapes. Some digital shapes can only be viewed and touched by moving around the physical space. By simply touching the shapes on the mobile device, users can randomly recompose the mural. In this way, the app allows users to creatively work with fundamental elements of art such as space, composition, form, and color. Special thanks to 3D contributions of Ean Mering.

Created as a part of the Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] collaboration, we created in interactive, digital augmentation that allows users to view and interact with the Jenny Holzer installation on the San Diego campus in situ via a mobile device. By touching the installation on the mobile device screen, users can randomly change the Holzer truisms, and also add their own truism texts by typing them in on the keypad. Special thanks to Ean Mering, Serhan Ulkumen, Jenny Tsoulos, Geoff Stead, and the Holzer Team.
Future city is a VR project developed in Unity for Oculus Rift that was presented at UCLA Cinema School's annual conference Transforming Hollywood: Alternative Realities, World Building & Immersive Entertainment. This project was included on the panel: Hip Deep in Knowledge: Virtual Museums, Immersive Journalism, and Scientific Vistas. Concept art by Ean Mering.
During the Art Basel event at the Wynwood Walls complex in Miami, Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] digitally augmented and animated five murals (How & Nosm, Aiko, Retna, Ryan McGinness, and Momo). Additionally, we resurrected the Shepard Fairey mural that he recently painted over. This project was sponsored by the Goldman Properties. Special shout out to Ean Mering for his collaborative efforts on the digital content creation.

In 1982, Keith Haring painted the first mural on the Houston & Bowery Street wall in New York City. Since the original Haring piece, the wall was bombed by ads and tags. However, in 2008, the wall was restored through the hard work of the wall's owner Tony Goldman and curator Jeffrey Deitch. The Goldman projects have collaborated with such artists as Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Sace, Kenny Scharf, JR, Faile and Retna. In June 2012, as part of the Re+Public collaboration between Re+Public [Heavy + PAC] used augmented reality to create a virtual history of the famous mural site. Users are able to take a virtual tour of the wall and view each each piece as it originally appeared.
