A mixed-media collage of digital 3D elements, original and archived photography, and a hand-drawn sketch, this work explores the symbiotic nature of cities and their inhabitants. In many ways, the failure of Pruitt-Igoe has become a symbol of local urban decline and the beginning of suburban sprawl. As an academic and an artist, BC Biermann's work has explored the democratizing intersections of technology and street art in urban spaces. As a St. Louis native, I see the city as a symbiotic whole where all inhabitants, regardless of race, are inextricably linked and whose struggles are not bound by time. In other words, borrowing from Derrida, it is not until we can see our own humanity in the other that we can begin to break the mirror that has only reflected ourselves. This work was part of the NO AD augmented reality app and was digitally displayed in the New York subway system.
